How to Set Goals
New year, new you? Nah, that’s not entirely necessary, you’re pretty epic just as you are, but I guess since you are here, you have dreams for your future that you’d love to realise.
Planning and goal setting is an important part of any dream, because if you don’t create a plan that will get you to your goal, then you are just dreaming. You must know the destination you are heading towards, otherwise any road will do.
Setting goals on paper helps you to focus on exactly what you need to do to achieve your goals. A well-set goal will highlight exactly what you are looking to achieve and by when. I tend to set short-term, medium-term, long-term and very long-term goals – this gives me a vision for my future and keeps me focused.
Complete The Wheel of Life® below, to rate your current level of satisfaction in each area of your life (1 = terrible; 10 = AMAZING, couldn’t be better), this will give you an holistic picture of where you are now and enable you to set goals that will improve your life as a whole.
Grab your journal, planner or some paper and using the SMART methodology and based on your goals for 2022, set yourself some goals for the short, medium and long term. Try answering the below questions for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and then for three-plus years.
· What is your goal?
· Is it Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, Trackable?
· What do you need to change to achieve this goal?
· Why is this goal important to you?
· What value can you link to this goal?
· Who can support you in achieving this goal?
· What can you do today to help make this a reality?
· How will you hold yourself accountable?
· How will you reward yourself for achieving this goal?
The sooner you are clear on your goals for 2022, the sooner you can create the plan to achieve your goals.
