Fittest by Forty – Week 2

When it comes to Personal Trainers, there is no doubt I am currently training with THE two ‘best of the best’ trainers in the industry. Both are two-time world champions in their sport and wonderful people to boot, which helps when someone is going to insist on 100 running knees, followed by 80 running knees (aka High Knees but it’s Muay Thai so running knees it is) and so on. The best bit is neither one of them interrupts a session to take photos, especially selfies. I REALLY hate gym selfies.

So why does a qualified Personal Trainer need two trainers you ask? Well their specialities are different to mine and different from each other; one is a bodybuilding figure world champion and the other a Muay Thai world champion – I’ll let you guess which is which. While I am not technically preparing to compete in either sport, I do want the expertise and commitment that comes with being top of your game, the best of the best, so I train with them both. I am learning a huge amount, about preparation, elite level competition and overcoming perceived obstacles on route to becoming the best you’ve ever been. I also know them both well enough by now to know that competition could very easily end up on my schedule, like it or not.

David (PT 1) tells me I am already very fit as most people just bloat, fart and gas their way through his Muay Thai sessions, which is apparently a direct indication of how fit a person is – honestly you do learn something new every single day.

I would be lying if I said I could do this without Claire and David. I work in Financial Services, the reality of that is there are invitations to drinks after work every night and poor, convenient food choices and a life filled with convenience. That’s not to say I was drinking every night; I actually rarely accept the invitations to after work drinks because I felt I’d rather go home as I was exhausted. I also developed a rather cynical viewpoint of ‘I don’t need any more friends; I already have enough friends I don’t see often enough’. These two trainers have been life changing for me, they are experienced enough to know exactly what will work for me, but they additionally have the personal knowledge and experience to be on point every week. The accountability I feel is second to none, even though David has repeatedly told me I need to only be accountable to myself. I know if I were to just stop, or worse still, not try, they would both be very disappointed but not in me, never in me and it is so very hard to feel like you are letting down people who believe in you and want the very best for you. All that aside, there is more to life than standing in Canary Wharf, pint in hand every night and I want to be fit enough that nothing in life is too much of a challenge – mentally or physically, so I fight the toughest battle of them all – the one where your mind has to fight your body every step of the way.

I have lost 1kg, actually 1.3kg to be exact, I know that sounds slow because I should be losing that every week and I would be if my body was behaving normally, but this 1.3kg feels different, it’s finally coming off my belly and it already shows in my face. This is so bloody exciting for me. I feel lighter in every way, I definitely am more motivated and excited than I’ve been in a long time and I really look forward to seeing the results and just how close to target I can get every day. One day this week, I even went over my protein requirement which was bloody funny because I’ve been moaning that I am struggling to hit my target. It really is getting easier and more intuitive as I go.

It’s difficult in the beginning because the high amount of protein felt really hard to get in and I really wasn’t sure I can do it, I am literally eating constantly, which is a huge benefit of a desk job.

The interesting thing, and wonderful side effect of this programme has been the number of really beautiful messages of support I have received, from someone volunteering to attend doctors appointments with me to advocate on my behalf, to people inspired to join the journey, to people just reaching out with support, to people admitting that they thought I had a perfect life (fuck me that’s funny) and didn’t realise I was going through anything. Since it’s been such a surprise to some that I’ve been going through “stuff”, I will write about this next week – but first I need to get some permissions.

A typical food day looks like this (brace yourself, there’s a LOT of chewing):

Americano with semi-skimmed milk

50g 90% Whey Isolate with 250ml organic skimmed milk

2 hard boiled eggs with Spinach

5% Natural Greek Yoghurt

Sushi – Sashimi, Nigiri, Maki Rolls, Inside out rolls

Sirloin Steak

Greek Salad

Dried apricots

25g 90% Whey Isolate with 250ml organic skimmed milk

2 hard boiled eggs with spinach

Omega 3

Vitamin D3

Megavit Multivitamin

BCAA pre and post workout

PT1:A typical David session looks like this (his sessions are not typical and no session is ever repeated, so this is merely a consistency topic):

  • David burpees with a gymnast crunch – essentially this is “lie down, get back up” repeatedly. But it’s more fun if you add a series of floor rolls into the mix. This is a David and Vicki trademark – don’t steal this.
  • Some sparring
  • Some new techniques
  • Running knees (10, 20, 30, 40, 5060, 70, 80, 90, 100)
  • Static knees (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 – repeat on the other side)
  • Dead bugs with a band
  • Bear crawls
  • Assault bike (I hate this and I hate David when he makes me do this) or Versa Climb Tabata

PT2: A typical Claire session looks like this:

  • Mobility exercises – lunge reach, foam roller, peanut
  • Incline chest press
  • Floor press ( I have managed to “fall off the floor” more than once – don’t ask)
  • Incline row
  • Sled pushes
  • Sled squat pulls
  • Twisting ball slams
  • SkiErg Tabata – I love this

Have a fantastic week, start strong and make it count.

What i do not understand is how you are not actually a lot more neatly-preferred than you might be now.
You’re very intelligent. You already know significant stuff when it comes to this subject, made me in my view consider it
from a lot of various angles. Its like men and women don’t
seem to be involved until it’s one thing to do with
Girl gaga! Your own stuffs nice. At all times care for it up!
